How Fasting Changed My Life — And Why It Can Change Yours

Updated: Aug 15, 2025

For years, I was stuck in the same frustrating loop.

I’d try a new diet… lose some weight… and then slowly slide back into old habits. My energy crashed. My clothes got tighter. My confidence dipped. And no matter what I tried, I just couldn’t break the cycle.

I wasn’t lazy.I wasn’t unmotivated.I just didn’t have the right system.

That all changed when I discovered fasting — not as a fad diet, but as a discipline that reshaped my body, rewired my habits, and restored my health.

Today, I want to share exactly how fasting transformed my life — and why it can do the same for you.

My Journey From "Big Guy" to Lean, Strong, and Disciplined

I grew up in a rural area, the youngest of four, always on the move. Sports, yard work, gardening — I was active without even thinking about it.

But when I went to college, things changed.

Less movement. More late nights. More processed food. I started gaining weight fast. At my heaviest, I was close to 300 pounds. I was depressed, directionless, and using food as a coping mechanism — without even realizing it.

The turning point came when my college roommate, Wayne, looked me in the eye one day and asked:

“Pete, what are you doing with your life?”

That question hit me hard. It forced me to think about what I enjoyed, what I was good at, and who I wanted to become.

I decided to go back to school to become a PE teacher — but I knew I couldn’t lead from the front if I didn’t take care of my own health.

The First Steps Back

I started small:

  • Drinking more water

  • Doing incline push-ups on the stairs

  • Making better food choices

Over time, I got back into the gym, played basketball again, and started building muscle. But my eating habits still kept me from getting truly lean.

I’d eat “clean” during the week and then let go on weekends. I looked stronger, but still bulky — and nowhere near my potential.

Discovering Fasting — And the Breakthrough Moment

Everything changed when I came across Jeremy Scott Fitness on Instagram.

His approach combined intermittent fasting, interval training, and balanced nutrition. I joined his 42-day challenge and, for the first time, followed a structured program.

Not only did I start losing fat fast…I began to realize something important:

I wasn’t eating because I was hungry.I was eating because it was “time to eat.”

Growing up, I’d been told, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” And while it’s true that your first meal matters, it doesn’t have to be at 7 AM. What matters most is what you eat to break your fast — not when.

How Fasting Changed My Relationship With Food

When I started skipping breakfast, I thought it would be impossible.

But the opposite happened.

I realized it’s okay to feel hunger — and that my body could thrive without constant eating.

I learned:

  • How to break a fast with the right foods to fuel my body

  • How fasting triggers autophagy (cell cleanup and repair)

  • How eating in a shorter window made me more intentional with my food choices

Fasting taught me discipline. It made it easier to say “no” to foods that didn’t serve me. And it simplified my life — fewer meals, better quality, more energy.

Over time, I experimented:

  • Weekly 36–48 hour fasts

  • OMAD (One Meal A Day) — my current routine 95% of the time

These habits didn’t just change my body. They sharpened my mind. They strengthened my willpower. And they gave me a new level of clarity in my faith and my work.

Why I’m Qualified to Teach Fasting for Weight Loss

Today, fasting is a core part of how I coach my clients. Here’s why I can confidently teach it:

  1. I understand the science — I know how fasting impacts hormones, metabolism, and fat loss. I can break it down in plain language so anyone can understand.

  2. I’ve lived it — I’ve gone from nearly 300 pounds to lean, strong, and energized… and I’ve helped clients do the same.

  3. I personalize the approach — Fasting isn’t one-size-fits-all. I help men find a style that works for their goals, schedule, and lifestyle.
